Do some queer stories go beyond words – and how can art and illustration bring them to life? How do graphic novels and zines allow creators to tell fantastical stories in ways that uncover queer truths?
This panel brings together writers, artists and visual creators to discuss what happens when words and pictures collide. Chaired by queer punk artist/author Sina Shamsavari in discussion with GLAAD award winning writer Joe Glass, and award-winning visual artist azbt, we’ll be looking at the advantages and challenges of producing work where words and visuals take equal billing.
(Chair) Seena Shamsavari (aka Sina Sparrow) is an iconic illustrator and comic book artist, as well as a prolific zine maker. He began producing zines as a teen throughout the 1980s and 90s, contributing to the queer punk scene with works discussing the hostility held towards the community at that time. His most popular work, Boy Crazy Boy, was created in 1993. It follows instances of life as a queer man at the time through both action and introspection, themes which are sustained in his 2012 zine, Art Fag. He now continues the conversation around these topics as a lecturer in Cultural Studies at the London College of Fashion.
Joe Glass is a GLAAD Award winning writer from South Wales. Mostly known for his LGBTQ+ superhero series The Pride (now published as The Pride Omnibus by Dark Horse Comics/ComiXology Originals), he’s also worked on other comics titles likeGlitter Vipers, Acceptable Losses, The Miracles, and the multi-award winning m/m romance anthologyYoung Men in Love, which we wrote for and co-edited. He has also worked on several novels, including adult gay romcoms such as A Con Affair and Crisis of Infinite Boyfriends. He has previously been a reporter on comics and pop culture, and continues to advocate for LGBTQ+ representation in the media.
Alex Taylor (azbt) is a London-based visual artist. He sprang further into the public eye after winning the 2023 First Graphic Novel award for his ongoing work, Bone Broth. Due to be published in late 2025, it is described to be a coming of age queer thriller, taking place in the backdrop of a ramen shop. Beyond comics and zines, they thrive in multiple media formats such as film and painting, all of which carry themes of queerness, identity and mental health, all drawn from own experiences. These each take a uniquely engaging and rich approach to the subject matter explored, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the queer experience.
Meg-John (MJ) Barker (they/them) is a writer, zine-maker, collaborator, contemplative practitioner, creative mentor, and friend. They are the author of a number of popular books on sex, gender, and relationships, including graphic guides to Queer, Gender, and Sexuality; How To Understand Your Gender, Sexuality and Relationships; Life Isn’t Binary, Enjoy Sex (How, When, and IF You Want To), Rewriting the Rules, and Hell Yeah Self Care. They also publish zines, comics, and free books on themes such as plurality, trauma, consent, and creativity via their website rewriting-the-rules.com.
This panel has been curated by students from the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex.
