Robin Whitmore The Queer Chorus – lovers who resist
We’ve invited artist Robin Whitmore to manifest a dream guestlist of LGBTQIA+ literary icons, past and present, to grace The Coast is Queer’s metaphorical red carpet.
Find Robin in the café bar throughout the weekend where he’ll be taking suggestions and crafting your favourite queer writers as life-sized cardboard cut-out figurines.
Keep your eyes peeled as the 2D VIPs start making their special appearances around the venue, maybe even for a book signing!
About Robin Whitmore
Robin Whitmore works across drawing, installation, theatre, and community arts, but his main interest is working with people. He is drawn to those who are marginalised in society and to the energy that emerges when diverse voices come together — the chaos, unpredictability, and unexpected creativity that arises in the process.
For thirty years he has worked in collaborative spaces: with Duckie’s raucous, radical live arts shows and with Camberwell Incredibles, an arts collective of adults with learning disabilities who challenge the way the world sees them. His work seeks moments of transformation — when difference becomes visible as beauty, and collaboration reveals its own hope and strength.
STUDENT CALL OUT TO SUPPORT ROBIN WHITMORE
The Coast is Queer LGBTQ+ Literary Festival would like to offer an opportunity for local students to support artist Robin Whitmore to create a growing installation celebrating LGBTQ+ literary legends across two days of their festival at Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts. Student volunteers will help Robin to craft some of the most iconic queer writers as life-sized cardboard cut-out figurines, as suggested by festival attendees, before placing the 2D VIPs around the venue to form the celebratory installation.
All students interested in the arts are welcome but the opportunity is ideal for LGBTQ+ or ally arts students. Volunteers do not need to be master artists – in fact different styles and abilities are preferred – but being able to take instructions and work fast and enthusiastically is essential. The installation will be created in the café bar within view of the festival attendees. Duties may include a bit of online research, drawing, painting, cutting, glueing, and placing the figurines.
Volunteers can sign up for one or more of the following slots:
